David Lanz is getting in touch with his romantic side once again, and Gary Stroutsos is along for the ride with SPIRIT ROMANCE. The album features Lanz on the piano alongside Stroutsos on the Xiao flute, a Chinese instrument with a distinctly reflective sound (kind of reminiscent to a Native American flute). Although there is some minor accompaniment (bass, synths, environmental sounds) on a few of the tracks, the focus is always put on the intuitive interplay between the two artists. One of the album's chief strengths is its subtlety - a sentimental mood is prevalent, but it is light and understated. In fact, this album would be equally ideal for alone time as it is for a romantic evening. Pop it in the CD player when you're looking to create a nice calm atmosphere and you won't be disappointed.
