The debut album from popular neo-Celtic group Secret Garden, SONGS FROM A SECRET GARDEN is a collection of romantic flights of fancy tailored around the weeping violin of Fionnuala Sherry and the pensive piano wanderings of Rolf Lovland. More so than their later releases, this album is a distinct classical tinge that resonates throughout much of the album. Listeners can easily pick out echoes of Satie's "Trois Gymnopedies" in the lush "Papillon" or the baroque sensibilities that comprise "Adagio." "Nocturne," one of the album's very few vocal tracks, took top honors at the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest and is recognized by fans of the group as quintessential Secret Garden material, meaning luxurious orchestration and Celtic inspiration with a bittersweet edge abounds. This is definitely one "garden" listeners will want to take a stroll through, especially if they have a penchant for sentimentality.
