Only a few singers really made a significant impact on vocal music in the 20th century, and Sarah Vaughan was one of them. With a large, versatile contralto voice that was capable of soaring highs and thunderous lows, Vaughan never met with a song that she couldn't spin into musical gold. This collection, from Blue Note's "Music for Lovers" series, features some of the great romantic songs of her career. Given that Vaughan was never prone towards romantic flights of fancy, a lot of the songs here feature her light-hearted, slightly sassy demeanor that she became famous for. Highlights of this set, comprised mostly from her 1960-1963 work on the Roulette label, include "If I Were A Bell" - a plucky duet with Joe Williams and the Count Basie Orchestra, the standard "The Very Thought of You," "The Man I Love" and the upbeat "Teach Me Tonight," also with Williams.
