The woodwind family of instruments has long been a specialty of Dean Evenson. However, until now, he has never devoted an entire album to the wooden flute, one of the most important instruments in Native American music. WOOD OVER WATER shows the pure beauty and depth of the instrument. It's low, swooping tones are light as air, yet are weighted with long-standing history and tradition. In addition to the flute, the album features an earthy soundscape of heartbeat drum and additional percussion instruments (drum, rattle) that give the music a strong Native American influence. Evenson has managed to strike a balance here between serenity and power, not to mention create a gorgeous showcase for the natural tones of the wooden flute.
