R. Carlos Nakai is one of most versatile artists in Native American music, as his catalog of albums clearly shows. He can either take an ultra-traditional path, providing classic Native American melodies and improvisation on solo flute; while at other times, he expands the boundaries of Native American music to include everything from a jazz quartet to Hawaiian slack-key guitar. VOYAGERS continues in Nakai's experimental vein, in this case featuring his haunting flute tones woven together with the cello playing of Udi Bar-David. Of all the collaborations Nakai has done, never before has he been paired with instrumentalist whose tone matches his so well. Both the cello and Native flute have a moody, reflective quality, making the interplay very well suited. Will Clipman provides some subtle rhythm in the background, and the song selection includes melodies with Native American, Jewish, Arabic and Turkish origins.
