Sometimes smooth with a festive gloss, mostly tender and nostalgic, Steve Hall's REJOICE makes a superb collection for creating a memorable mood around the holidays. The album features Hall's gentle manner of piano playing at its heart, with accompaniment by rhythm, strings and keyboards on some of the cuts. Hall picked a selection of songs that leans toward the softer side of the Christmas music spectrum, and his tranquil playing is very well suited to these type of cuts. The arrangements are straightforward, with Hall pairing up some of the melodically similar pieces to create medleys. Of note is Hall's very elegant rendition of "The First Noel" and an understated version of Handel's "For Onto Us A Child is Born" that is positively dreamy.
