RECONNECTIONS finds R. Carlos Nakai working in a quartet setting once again, only with different players this time around. On board are wind player Cliff Sarde, guitarist William Eaton and vocalist Randy Wood, who together create an epic work of contemporary Native American music. Rather than going the jazz route as he does with the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet, these contemporary excursions are more pop/groove based, with dramatic percussion work, different types of strings and Nakai's flute leading the way. A few of the tracks have some very interesting influences rearing their heads, like funk on "Native Urban" and some Asian koto-sounding strings on "Prairie Fires." The tempos range from meditative to driving and the ensemble does a fantastic job of capturing the more upbeat side of Native American music.
