RAGA CYCLE is a collaboration between veteran flutist Dean Evenson and the father/son sitar duo of Pandit Shivnath Mishra and Deobrat Mishra. These particular ragas, termed "Raja Ragas" (historically designed for the meditation use of royalty), display a unique call/response style of playing that blends tradition with modern improvisation. The album features five different pieces, sequenced so that the moods thematically mirror a "day to night" cycle. In addition to the enchanting sitar sounds, the soundscapes are also comprised of light synthesized ambience, Evenson's silver flute playing and subtle vocal textures that are woven into the backdrop. Given that these ragas were originally composed for meditation, they work perfectly for creating an environment where mindfulness and inner healing thrives.
