The indigenous sounds of California's Big Sur coastline, both above and below the water, is the focus of this edition from Bernie Krause and his "Wild Sanctuary" series. Listeners start by roaming the beach, where crystalline blue waves crash upon the sandy shore. Overhead a variety of gulls clatter and the occasional sea lion can be heard calling in the distance. Soon, however, you are plunged beneath the surface to experience the fascinating sounds of the deep firsthand. Humpback whales and orcas send resonant calls across the liquid expanses in what appears to be a form of communication. Listeners are also treated to the sounds of snapping shrimp, red and black drum fish, parrot fish, croakers and more, which are rarely heard on aquatic recordings.
