Martinique, Haiti, Guadeloupe and French Guinea are a few of the islands whose musical landscape is glimpsed on FRENCH CARIBBEAN. Like other Caribbean islands, the importation of slaves during the 16th and 17th centuries brought an influx of beats and rhythms from Africa into the region. Later, French colonialism would leave its mark on local musical traditions as well, creating the unique hybrid of influences that defines the music of these lands to this day. For this compilation, Putumayo brings together artists that dabble in styles like the compas, zouk, and beguine like Jean-Luc Alger, Carimi, Haiti Twoubadou, Kali and others.
