Early on, while listening to EARTH ASCENDING from Marina Raye, you're struck by an anomaly. The music is very contemporary (as evidenced by the lush swirls of synthesizer ambience) but at the same time, it's ancient, primal - making the listener feel as if they're glimpsing an organic view of the world not seen in ages. It calls to mind a place quite different from America's urban sprawls, a quiet landscape where man and nature coexist in harmony. Raye, dubbed the "feminine voice of the flute," lives up to her moniker with this beautiful album of melodious flute expressions. Subtle percussion (drum beats, rattles) enhances the tracks, yet never overpowers them. In fact, the percussion has a soft, distant quality that suggests spaciousness, giving the album a multi-dimensional effect. Haunting and ethereal, the music of Raye is a wonderful companion for solitude and peaceful contemplation.
