A runaway success, and a surprise one at that - Norah Jones' debut album COME AWAY WITH ME would go on to become the big winner at the 2003 Grammy awards. Jones has a rather interesting pedigree; her father is the illustrious sitar master Ravi Shankar and her sister is sitar improviser Anoushka Shankar. In other words, music is in her blood. On this album, Jones introduces the world to her sultry, subdued vocal capabilities, which have drawn comparisons to a young Billie Holiday. Her arrangements are a sparse mix of jazz and folk elements. The overall sound of the recording is very mellow and breezy and the tracklist features a mix of original tunes and covers (including songs by Hank Williams and Hoagy Carmichael), all of which focus on the vocals of Jones. Produced by Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson), the album also includes an ensemble comprised of musicians Bill Frisell, Brian Blade, Lee Alexander and Kevin Breit.
