Like Odysseus of Homer's epic "The Odyssey" (who influenced the album's opening invocation), Loreena McKennitt has been on a journey that has taken her around the world and back. AN ANCIENT MUSE is her travelogue. With her first album in almost nine years, McKennitt offers a rich, ornate collection of self-produced gems that takes the listener from the cliffs of Ireland through the Mediterranean region and onward to the fabled Silk Road. Pairing romance with history, McKennitt's tales of English royalty, Greek mythology and Turkish tradition are incredibly compelling, made more so by McKennitt's glorious dulcet voice. The songs are woven from a tapestry of period and regional instruments (uileann pipes, nykelharpa, cello and Turkish clarinet, to name a few) and rank among the best she has done to date. Of note is the haunting requiem "The English Ladye and The Knight," which uses a Sir Walter Scott poem as the basis and the melancholy, medieval sounding viol de gamba to paint a picture of chivalry and heartache.
