Fiery fiddler Bonnie Rideout gravitates away from the gusto of her last couple march-oriented releases in favor of exploring Scottish music's softer side with SCOTTISH REFLECTIONS. A compilation of collaborations between Rideout and members of the Maggie's Music clan, the album includes performances from folk ensemble Hesperus, Sue Richards on harp, Maggie Sansone on hammered dulcimer, Karen Ashbrook and Paul Oorts on flute/accordion respectively and Robin Bullock on mandolin. Rideout's passion and flair for melodic beauty can be felt on many of the cuts including "The Thistle," a joyful tune based on 18th century parlor music and "Dunblane" a lilting lament about a 1996 tragedy that took place in the titular town.
Traditional Scottish carols, wassail tunes, strathspeys and reels for the celebration of Christmas, Hogmanay & the New Year, featuring Bonnie Rideout on Scottish fiddle, Al Pettaway on guitar & cittern, Maggie Sansone on hammered dulcimer, Eric Rigler on Highland bagpipes, Scottish smallpipes & Uilleann pipes, with cello and percussion.
The pairing of Rideout with the City of Washington Pipe Band--an award-winning pipe band and drum corps, 26 members strong-- certainly generates plenty of spirit, especially when the troupe infuses a surprising variety of tunes with all the rhythmic drive and vitality it can muster. Whether opening ears with a set of Spanish reels and jigs or sticking closer to home with the Congressional Reel Set, the sound of Rideout and the CWPB, alone or together, often makes for inspired ranting.
