Brent's life is his music, and the study of tribal rhythms. His education has been intense and in-depth studying with drum masters in different parts of the world. His experience studying with the master professor Mr. Kwasi Badu of Ghana, Africa, was profound and very meaningful. Brent has traveled throughout Africa to study the roots of African music, tribal ceremonies and rhythms. His music takes ancestral rhythms from all over the world and combines them for a unique world beat.
DRUMSEX BY BRENT LEWIS
DRUMSEX - there's a title that definitely grabs your attention. Drop this CD into your player and you will find that the music grabs it as well. Brent Lewis presents an album that is likely his strongest to date. The rhythms are multi-layered, with his trademark Ikauma drums fleshing out the "melody" portion of the pieces. Despite the erotic suggestions of the title, the music has more of a vigorous tribal feel, which is enhanced by sound/instrument samples on a many of the tracks. "The Gates of Gomorrah," for example is a surreal whirl of complex rhythms and eerie night sounds. "Dinner at the Sugarbush," by contrast is a straight percussion tune that sports some impressive, heavy-duty beats. It's Lewis' funkiest album so far - a must for percussion fans!

Strong melody is not something you'd expect from an all-percussion album, but with Brent Lewis at the helm, that's exactly what you get. Falling somewhere between African tribal and Caribbean styles, the music of EARTH DRUM RHYTHMS is a joy to listen to. In addition to composing and producing the album, Lewis also performs solo on the Ikauma drums (a set of 22 tuned drums on a large stand that are designed to achieve a variety of tones). Most of the tracks fall into the mid-tempo range and have a gentle, rhythmic quality that could be used for meditation, dance/choreography or simply as background music.

The man behind the hit album DRUMSEX is back for more adrenaline-pumping rhythmic ecstasy. JANGALA marks the latest chapter in the percussive story of Brent Lewis, featuring his trademark ikauma drums melded with jazzy grooves and plethora of wonderfully wild instrumentation. For the uninitiated, ikauma drums are a set of 22 drums, tuned to the notes of a piano. They have a great deal more melodic range than one would normally consider for a drum, allowing Lewis to concoct some truly unique, adventurous sounding music. With JANGALA, Lewis is joined by the likes of Richard Hardy (sax), Bobby Furgo (violin), Bobby Zee (keyboards), Mic Gilette (horns) and many others to create his funky grooves. The music is brimming with danceable energy and smooth vibes - good luck trying to keep still!

On the follow-up to his naughty-but-nice, top-selling album DRUMSEX, Brent Lewis once again flirts with infectious grooves, powerful drum rhythms and creative arrangements. JOURNEY OF SOULS has a lush, at times loungey sound that blends the earthy throb of tribal drumming with light jazz textures and shuffling beats. "Dance With Me," for example, has a bit of a Latin samba sound, while "Harmonic Village" uses keyboards that are a throwback to the classic cocktail lounge sound of the 60s. His signature instrument - the Ikauma drums, adds personality and tropical flavor to the songs, providing the main melody on each cut. Lewis also has a knack for making good use of themes in his songs, and this album is no different. From the jungle flavors of "A Cry in the Night" to the thunderstorm imagery of "Rain Runner" to the peaceful whimsy of "Soul of My Brother," Lewis immerses you in a rich, vibrant world of drumming that never fails to invigorate.

Nobody can accuse Brent Lewis of not having rhythm. Put the artist in front of a set of Ikauma drums and prepare to be mesmerized. A follow-up in spirit to their 2002 healing arts-themed album YOGA RHYTHM, YOGA GROOVE offers a collage of catchy rhythms, Asian flavors and melodic keyboards. From the get-go, the music is very upbeat and user-friendly - partially due to the infectious rhythms lain down by Brent Lewis, who gives the music a tribal touch. Vocalese and chant samples are sprinkled throughout, making the music feel Eastern in nature (a quality which is enhanced by mild use of sitar on some of the tracks). As the name suggests, the album was designed with yoga in mind; and to that end, the music would work well for faster yoga workouts or trance dancing. The producers at Soulfood worked hand in hand with Yoga instructors, including Present Moment Retreat instructor CJ Page, to ensure an atmosphere that works perfectly with the healing art form.
