Fresh from a Grammy win (for his album THINKING OF YOU) multi-instrumentalist mastermind Kitaro invites everyone to explore the exciting new world of ANCIENT. Steeped in an adventurous array of synthesizers, percussion, wind instruments and orchestral accompaniment, Kitaro blends Middle Eastern and Asian influences into a tapestry of cultures and civilizations long past. The album's two bookends "NILE" and "BEYOND" feature the symphonic splendor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, whose presence gives the tracks a larger than life feel. Other offerings include the Arabian themed "Ritual Dance" and the Indian flavors of "Unicorn," making for an album that's both rich and diverse.

One of the most defining projects of Kitaro's career was his soundtrack work for the Japanese documentary series "Silk Road" during the early 80's. Besides spawning the theme song, which is arguably Kitaro's greatest and most recognizable composition to date, these recordings set the tone for many of his future releases. BEST OF SILK ROAD is a look back at some of the more majestic offerings from the "Silk Road" albums. The ageless beauty and sheer magnificence of ancient Japan is captured in the synthesizer driven shakuhachi/erhu melodies of "Mirage" and "Taklamakan Desert." In addition, Kitaro provides a previously unreleased rendition of the "Silk Road Theme" and a new track "Pray at Xian/Mercury" (performed during his 2002 tour).

Kitaro is undeniably one of the best known and most accomplished artists in new age music. Over the course of his 30 year career, he has sold millions of albums, won a Grammy award, scored motion pictures and for the stage, taken a pilgrimage to some of Japan's holiest temples and recorded in locations previously off limits to other artists. His sound, which swings from bombastic synthesized drama to graceful flute solos, is highly characteristic of the artist, especially his swooping synthesizer sounds which are reminiscent of an electric erhu, and his lush spacey soundscapes which elevate traditional Asian music to an entirely different and unique level. This greatest hits collection covers many different facets of Kitaro's career, including earlier material like his signature hit "Theme from Silk Road" and more recent offerings, such as a few tracks from his "Journey of Ku-Kai" albums and a cut from his soundtrack to the Broadway production "Cirque Ingenieux."

Motivated by the events of September 11th and the myriad of other global conflicts that have taken place in its wake, Kitaro was inspired to create an album of holistic music designed to promote peace and the acknowledgement of beauty in one's life. The music features Kitaro's characteristic blend of airy, ambient synthesizers, enchanting keyboard sounds, drums and flutes (including special guest Nawang Khechog on bamboo flute). In addition, Kitaro recently participated in the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage, a spiritual journey that involves visiting each of the 88 temples on the island of Shikoku. Along the way, he sampled bell sounds from each of the sacred temples and used them as the basis for the tracks on this recording.

Kitaro is one of the few new age artists that can really claim to have a sound that is all his own. Whether it's his signature swooping synths or his strong grasp of mood, which he applies like a masterful calligraphy painter sweeping the canvas with his brush, Kitaro's music certainly makes an impression. SACRED JOURNEY OF KU-KAI VOLUME 3 continues the artist's series of albums inspired by his pilgrimage to each of the 88 temples of Shikoku, capturing both the spiritual exuberance and the quiet meditation that he experienced along the journey. The album is consistent with Kitaro's last few albums, featuring soft pieces like "Winds Blow Over the Hill," which recalls his popular "Silk Road" theme, and more aggressive offerings, like "After the Rain" with its thundering drum rhythms and patches of electric guitar. If you enjoyed the first two legs of this 'sacred journey,' the continuation is certainly worth the trip.

Dramatic synthesizer orchestrations have long been Kitaro's forte; in fact, he's one of the originators of the style. With SPIRITUAL GARDEN, Kitaro maintains the theatricality of his signature approach, but tones down the music to give it a more contemplative feel. The album's inspiration is the expressionistic and colorful Japanese dance form called Harupin-Ha Budoh dance, or "Budoh" for short. Falling in line with the unstructured movement of the dance, Kitaro's music is dreamy and fluid, featuring quasi-Asian melodies constructed out of his trademark synths, twinkly bell sounds, light percussion, strings and electric guitar. SPIRITUAL GARDEN is also the first CD to feature collaborative work with his wife Keiko.
