Nawang Khechog, one of Tibet's foremost contemporary musicians, joins producer Kitaro on a musical journey through the landscape and spiritual traditions of Tibetan culture. KARUNA (the Sanskrit word for compassion) is, for the most part, an acoustic outing, featuring indigenous instrumentation from a variety of cultures. Included are South American rain sticks, Indian percussion, Japanese Taiko drums, Australian didgeridoo and a variety of flutes, chants and nature sounds. One particular instrument of note is the "Universal Horn," a creation of Khechog's that could be described as a hybrid of the didgeridoo and a Tibetan horn. Besides acting as producer, Kitaro lends his synthesizers to a pair of tracks, providing the lone contemporary edge to the proceedings. A former monk, Khechog brings to the table the serenity and introspection of Tibetan spiritual teachings, which helps to make this music extremely meditative and absorbing.

MUSIC AS MEDICINE BY NAWANG KHECHOG & R. CARLOS NAKAI
Some believe that simply hearing the name of the Medicine Buddha or viewing an image of its likeness is enough to elicit healing in an individual. With this recording, famed bamboo flutist Nawang Khechog seeks to obtain the blessings of the Medicine Buddha through a series of flute improvisations. Joined by veteran Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai, Khechog presents eleven cuts of pure, meditative bliss. In some cases, the album features the intertwining of Khechog's ethereal bamboo flute and Nakai's earthy Native American counterpart, which provides a beautiful communication between two cultures. On other tracks, such elements as chant, singing, horns and drums are included as well.

A former monk and a highly skilled bamboo flutist, Nawang Khechog has a gift for creating music that's introspective and spiritually moving. QUIET MIND is a collection of subtle pieces designed to do just what the title describes - promote mindfulness and the experience of living in the moment. Each track features a sonic meditation based on a specific instrument. In most cases it is the bamboo flute, although the didgeridoo, Incan panpipes and the silver flute are worked into the mix as well. The pieces are reverberated to give a sense of clarity and solitude and the music has an improvised, open-ended feel that is conducive for meditation practices.

RHYTHMS OF PEACE features ten compositions centered on the subtle beauty of the bamboo flute, as performed by Nawang Khechog. Concepts of stillness and peace are central on this recording - the music is vast and airy, providing a sublime atmosphere for meditation practices. In addition to flute, Khechog also incorporates didgeridoo, drums, gongs and bells into the mix, which adds to the album's sense of mysticism, not to mention rhythm (as the title implies). Khechog's goal is to spread love and unity around the world through his music. This album seems to be doing just that.

If there were one sound that could easily be associated with peace, it would have to be the soft, earthy sonorities of the bamboo flute. Nawang Khechog is a master of the instrument, which he proves on this set of meditative offerings. SOUNDS OF PEACE features eight pieces that centrally focus on the nuances of the bamboo flute, as well as a couple that also incorporate the sounds of the didgeridoo. The harmonies are tranquil and flowing, providing a spacious atmosphere where mindfulness can thrive. Another thing about this recording that makes such a powerful listening experience is its inherent sense of spirituality. Khechog performs each of these pieces with almost a prayerful reverence - the music is beautiful, introspective and soulful.

There's only one thing that you really need to be successful with meditation - a quiet mind. And unfortunately, for many that's the biggest stumbling block. This album from veteran flutist and former monk Nawang Khechog was designed to help you with that obstacle, providing a full hour of gentle and overwhelmingly soothing music that will make it easier to achieve peace of mind and the mental clarity that goes with it. Khechog's flute is the centerpiece of the album, performed in a slow, zen-like manner throughout most of the album. Some of the tracks do introduce other instrumentation, like "Infinite Love" which features Sandra Wong on violin and James Hoskins on cello, or "Under the Wings of Blessing," with the light, fragile vocals of Tsering Khechog blended into the mix. But in these cases, the enhancements are understated and the atmosphere remains quiet and reflective throughout.

Nawang Khechog's goal as an artist is to use his thought-provoking sonorities to spread peace, love and compassion to all corners of the globe. Laden with the meditative traits of Buddhist philosophy, of which he studied as a monk for over a decade, Khechog creates a place of stillness that contrasts the chaos of our world. UNIVERSAL LOVE is an album of improvised bamboo flute melodies set against a backdrop of chant vocals, didgeridoo, bells and percussion. This beautiful music is an organic tonic for the soul, filled with mystery, spirituality and serenity.
